From Desert Glow to Coastal Calm: The Story Behind The Dunes of Naples

From Desert Glow to Coastal Calm

“The Dunes of Naples” is one of those paintings that felt like a quiet homecoming. After years of painting the Southwest’s red rocks and glowing horizons, I wanted to revisit another kind of light—the soft radiance of the coast, where air, water, and memory intertwine. The idea came to me after spending time along the beaches of Naples, Florida, where early mornings bring a hush over the shoreline and the colors seem to hum just before sunrise.

Painting the Spirit of Sand and Sea

I painted this piece “The Dunes of Naples” in my signature fluorescent 3-D acrylics, using the same glowing technique that defines my Sedona landscapes. But here, instead of canyon walls, it’s the dunes that hold the glow. The composition opens with golden sand scattered with dark stones—some shaped like hearts—leading toward the rippling water. Grasses rise on either side, framing the path, while the ocean stretches outward under a radiant sky of magenta, indigo, and rose. As the sun slips toward the horizon, its reflection ties together sky and water in a single luminous breath.

Reflections Between Two Worlds

There’s something deeply personal about this painting of “The Dunes of Naples”, for me. It carries the same glowing spirit as my Sedona works, but with the calm rhythm of the sea. When I look at it, I feel both the quiet of the desert after sunset and the gentle pull of waves at dusk—it’s all part of the same energy. That balance of reflection and renewal is what I wanted to share.

Under natural light, “The Dunes of Naples” colors shimmer softly; under black light, the dunes, sky, and ocean reveal a new dimension—vivid and alive, as if breathing. This luminous shift is something no photo can fully convey; it’s an experience that changes with the light and the mood of the room.

Collectors who connect with “The Dunes of Naples” often tell me it brings them peace—a reminder of travel, light, and quiet places. It pairs beautifully with my other coastal works such as “Always on Vacay,” “La Jolla,” and “Serenity at Sunset.” Each carries its own kind of stillness, yet they all speak the same language of light. You can find my art at Sedona’s Village Gallery thr top gallery in all of Sedona, AZ.
