The Story Behind The Dunes of Naples
For more than twenty years, my wife and I vacationed in Naples, Florida. Long before Sedona became home, the shoreline there felt strangely familiar to me. I had grown up vacationing along the dunes of Long Beach Island in New Jersey, and Naples carried that same peaceful rhythm of wind, sand, and sea.
We often stayed at a boutique resort called Gulf Point, located on Vanderbilt Beach. Over time the place became part of our tradition, and eventually I was commissioned by a fellow Gulf Point owner to paint the resort itself.
Those years left a deep impression on me, and the quiet beauty of the Dunes of Naples stayed with me long after we returned home. This painting, The Dunes of Naples, grew directly from those memories.
Painting the Spirit of Sand and Sea
Although this painting captures a coastal landscape, it was created using the same fluorescent acrylic techniques that define my luminous Sedona landscapes.
Instead of canyon walls glowing with desert light, here the dunes carry the glow.
Golden sand stretches forward, scattered with dark stones—some quietly shaped like hearts—leading the eye toward the gentle rhythm of the ocean. Sea grasses rise on both sides, framing a natural pathway that guides the viewer toward the horizon.
Above it all, the sky unfolds in radiant bands of magenta, rose, and indigo as the sun settles toward the water. Its reflection ties together sky and ocean in a single luminous breath.
Under natural light the colors shimmer softly. Under black light the dunes, sky, and water reveal an entirely new dimension—vivid and alive in a way photographs rarely capture.
Where Desert Light Meets Ocean Memory
Even though much of my work is known for Sedona southwest paintings, this piece carries the same luminous spirit.
It simply speaks through a different landscape.
Collectors often tell me that “The Dunes of Naples” brings a feeling of calm—almost meditative. For many, it becomes a reminder of travel, warm beaches, and quiet moments by the water.
This coastal painting also connects naturally with several of my other shoreline works, including Always on Vacay, La Jolla, and Serenity at Sunset, each exploring a different relationship between water, light, and memory.
The Heart of It All
Art lights up the same part of your brain as
falling in love—it’s an unforgettable feeling.
Collector’s Note
While much of my work is inspired by the glowing landscapes of the Southwest, “The Dunes of Naples” reflects another part of my story—places that shaped my sense of light long before Sedona entered my life.
My work is also featured at the Village Gallery in Sedona—a Sedona art gallery known for representing only hand-made artwork by local artists, widely regarded as the true heart of Sedona’s art community.
