The Story Behind the Painting
Sedona’s Mystical Moonrise is a panoramic fluorescent acrylic painting where I first fully explored the luminous potential of glowing color and Sedona’s mystical night sky.
During a conversation about the painting, a friend suggested a simple but powerful idea: what if the moon were replaced with Earth? That thought eventually inspired a later reinterpretation of this scene—but before that transformation ever happened, the original vision of Sedona’s red rocks glowing beneath a radiant moon had already taken shape on canvas.
The panoramic format allowed the landscape to stretch outward like a stage beneath the night sky. Bell Rock and Courthouse Butte rise quietly against a field of shifting blues and violets, while the moon hangs above the desert like a silent witness—two of Sedona’s most recognizable guardians of the landscape beneath the vast Arizona sky.
Under black light the pigments reveal something unexpected. Shadows deepen, colors begin to glow, and the landscape takes on a subtle dimensional presence. What first appears calm and grounded begins to feel almost alive with movement.
Small symbolic elements appear throughout the scene. A twelve-pointed star in the upper sky suggests quiet wisdom. In the foreground, a whimsical mermaid figure rests among the desert forms—a playful reminder that imagination often lives where landscape and myth quietly meet.
The idea of replacing the moon eventually led to a cosmic reinterpretation of this scene in Sedona’s Hypnotic Earthrise, where the sky shifts from mystical desert wonder to a broader reflection on our place in the universe.
Many collectors who connect with the quiet mystery of Sedona’s Mystical Moonrise enjoy discovering how this painting later evolved into another work where the moon becomes Earth, shifting the scene from mystical desert landscape to a cosmic Sedona perspective
