The Story Behind the Painting

Ten years ago, while exploring Utah, I visited both Bryce Canyon and Zion National Parks. Recently, while going through old 35mm slides, I rediscovered a sunset photograph I had taken of “The Watchman” from the Canyon Junction Bridge. I immediately knew I wanted to turn the scene into Zion National Park art.

The Virgin River flows through the center of the scene, with the Watchman hiking trail on one side and the Pa’rus bike trail on the other. That peaceful combination of flowing water, glowing cliffs, and dramatic desert light inspired this fluorescent acrylic painting into this luminous Zion National Park art piece.

Years earlier, I painted Bryce Canyon during one of my earliest artistic explorations beyond Sedona. But unlike that traditional painting, “The Watchman’s Glow” became an opportunity to fully embrace the luminous energy and atmosphere that now define much of my Southwest landscape art, Sedona canvas art, and Sedona art prints.

Using layered fluorescent acrylics, I transformed this Zion National Park scene into a vivid, mystical landscape brimming with warmth, movement, and color. Under black light, hidden pigments emerge across the sky, canyon walls, and Virgin River, creating a dramatic day-to-night transformation collectors have come to recognize in my glowing paintings, luminous artwork, and Sedona wall art collections.

While inspired by Utah’s majestic landscape, this Zion National Park art shares the same emotional energy found throughout my desert landscape and Sedona canvas art collections.
