The Story Behind “Prism Sky”

When I started exploring a new direction in my art, Prism Sky became only the second painting I finished in this emerging style—Inspired being the first. Both were created from mornings spent at Yavapai Vista Point, one of my favorite overlooks in Sedona. From that spot, the land spreads out in brilliant color and incredible depth.

The sweeping Gibraltar ridge, part of Sedona’s Mermaid Rock, has always sparked my imagination. It’s one of those quiet landmarks locals recognize instantly, but few take the time to study. I wanted to recreate that moment when the earth and sky meet in a dance of color—the very reason I fell in love with Sedona.

In those early days of my Sedona art studio, I was rediscovering the balance between design, composition, and emotion. Prism Sky marked a turning point—a declaration that my Southwest artwork could shine with vitality even without fluorescence.

A New Light in Acrylic

This luminous artwork of Prism Sky belongs to my family of Sedona luminous landscapes, where color drives the story. I used layered acrylics to evoke the sensation of sunlight refracting across the desert. The greens pulse with vitality; the reds, ambers, and violets mirror Sedona’s heartbeat. Rather than mimicking reality, I aimed to translate it into emotion—to depict what the air feels like after a summer storm, when the Southwest wall art around you seems to shimmer between worlds. Years later, when I painted Sedona’s Hypnotic Earthrise—a panoramic piece featuring the same mountain range—I realized Prism Sky had quietly planted the seed for that larger vision.

From Sedona to Guangzhou

In 2019, Prism Sky traveled far beyond Sedona’s red rocks. Along with Sweet Dreams, Sky of Grace, Fire in the Sky, and Enchanted Castle, it was featured among twelve original paintings at the American Contemporary Art Show in Guangzhou, China—an exhibition that sold out to private collectors.

Seeing my Arizona art prints and original works displayed internationally was both humbling and electrifying. It confirmed that the spirit of Sedona—its rhythm, its mystery, its luminous color—transcends borders. That show remains one of the proudest moments of my career as an emerging Sedona artist.

Artistic Reflections

Every brushstroke of Prism Sky reminds me that artistic growth is a journey. Its layered hues and strong composition still feel alive to me—an early step toward the confident style I use today in my Sedona paintings and Southwest art gallery collections.  This Sedona artwork also connects emotionally with Sweet Dreams—both pieces reflecting the optimism and wonder that defined my early rebirth as an artist.
