Mermaid’s Magical Dream – A Hidden Sedona Story in Light and Color

Mermaid’s Magical Dream arose from a quiet discovery—one of those moments Sedona offers when you slow down and truly observe. After living here for more than fifteen years, I had started to feel like a local. Then I learned about a lesser-known red rock formation accessed from the Yavapai Trailhead, reminding me that Sedona still holds secrets.

Locals call this formation Mermaid Rock, sometimes referred to as Mermaid Mountain, and it is part of the Gibraltar rock landmark. Unlike nearby Cathedral Rock, this spot doesn’t announce itself. From the right angle, the ridgeline creates a subtle yet unmistakable mermaid silhouette lying on her side—delicate, graceful, and almost mythical. Once I saw it, that image stayed with me.

I photographed Mermaid Rock while hiking one of Sedona’s accessible trails from the Yavapai Trailhead. That same trailhead has inspired other Sedona artwork of mine, including ‘Inspired’ , Prism Sky, and ‘Sedona’s Hypnotic Moonrise,’ a panoramic painting. These landscapes reward patience, offering moments that feel personal rather than staged.

This original painting was created with fluorescent acrylics, allowing me to go beyond traditional Southwest artwork expectations. The bold magenta Italian Cypress trees are intentional—a striking departure from the usual green that shows my playful side and willingness to take creative risks. High-chroma acrylics and phosphorescent pigments give the piece a glow-in-the-dark quality, revealing a second life under black light.

There’s a deeper meaning behind that glow. Sedona was once underwater—hundreds of millions of years ago, this area was a shallow sea floor where limestone and sandstone formed from marine life and sediment. That ancient history quietly influences this  Sedona original. In a way, the mermaid feels less imagined and more remembered, reflecting Sedona’s submerged past.

The mermaid figure isn’t painted in — it’s revealed naturally. Shaped by the rock ridgeline, she only becomes visible when you slow down and really look. That idea runs through much of my Sedona wall art and mystical paintings. I’m drawn to landscapes that uncover themselves gradually rather than all at once.

Thsi images also carries a meaningful collector story. A New York collector who already owned one of my original Sedona paintings connected so deeply with this piece that he chose it as his second original of mine. Knowing this work would travel from Sedona to New York—becoming part of a growing personal collection—reinforced for me how universal these quiet desert stories can be. Even a hidden formation, known mostly to locals, can resonate far beyond the red rocks when light, color, and meaning align.

This piece sits at the intersection of luminous artwork and desert landscape painting. It is unmistakably Sedona art—rooted in real geography—yet elevated into mystical artwork through fluorescent color, layered light, and storytelling. It belongs within my Sedona luminous landscapes, where Southwest wall art meets imagination and history.

My Sedona paintings are showcased at Village Gallery, widely regarded as one of the top Sedona art galleries. It’s a place where collectors can stand in front of my Sedona artwork, experience the glow in person, and feel how light, color, and story interact beyond the screen.

Mermaid’s Magical Dream serves as a reminder that Sedona still holds stories—quiet ones, hidden in plain sight, unveiled through light.

Luminous Color and Day-to-Night Transformation

Fluorescent acrylics, phosphorescent highlights, and high-chroma pigments enable this Sedona wall art to transform after dark. The painting transitions from vibrant daylight desert scenery to glowing mystical art, providing two experiences in one piece.
