The Story Behind Enchantment

Some paintings become milestones without you realizing it at the time.

Painted in the early 1990s while I was still living in New Jersey, Enchantment marked my first serious foray into large-scale panoramic painting. Measuring an impressive 72 inches wide by 22 inches high, it was unlike anything I had attempted before and opened my eyes to the panoramic format’s storytelling power.

Long before I called Sedona home, I was captivated by the beauty and mystery of the American Southwest. Rather than focusing on a specific landmark, I wanted to capture a feeling—the peaceful glow of first light spreading across an endless desert landscape. The sweeping format allowed me to evoke a sense of openness and serenity that simply wasn’t possible in a traditional-sized painting.

Working in watercolor required patience and trust. Layered washes, soft transitions, and carefully controlled pigment movement allowed the landscape to emerge naturally. The medium’s transparency created a luminous atmosphere that became the soul of the painting.

Looking back, Enchantment became the foundation for many of the panoramic works that followed. Most notably, it paved the way for my Monument Valley masterpiece, John Ford Point, a monumental painting stretching 10 feet across. The confidence gained from creating Enchantment showed me that larger canvases could tell larger stories and immerse viewers in a way smaller works could not.

Although the original watercolor has long since found its permanent home, Enchantment remains one of my most requested images. What began as an early exploration of panoramic composition has become an important chapter in my artistic journey and a favorite among collectors who appreciate peaceful landscapes and timeless Southwest beauty.

From Watercolor to Fluorescent Acrylics

While Enchantment began as a traditional watercolor, it now lives on through Limited Edition Hand-Embellished Giclées. Each edition is individually enhanced in my studio with fluorescent acrylics, allowing me to add subtle texture, depth, and luminous color to this early panoramic image.

These hand-embellished editions bridge my watercolor beginnings and the fluorescent acrylic techniques that define much of my work today. No two are exactly alike, making each piece a unique collector’s edition.

If you didn’t know what you were looking at, you might think it was the original. Each piece carries the same presence, depth, and glowing energy, making every edition feel alive in its own way.

Enchantment and the Birth of My Panoramic Journey

Today, I see Enchantment as much more than an early watercolor. It marks the moment I discovered the power of the panorama—the ability to create an immersive experience inviting the viewer to step into the landscape.

Without Enchantment, John Ford Point, Rugged Serenity, Fire in the Sky, and many of the panoramic paintings that followed might never have existed. It was the first step on a path that continues to inspire my work today.

Pairing Note

Collectors drawn to Enchantment often enjoy other panoramic landscapes such as Rugged Serenity, Fire in the Sky, and Monument Valley’s John Ford Point, creating a cohesive collection that celebrates the expansive beauty of the American Southwest.
