The Story Behind the Painting
In 1967, my wife and I were traveling through Liechtenstein with no real plan—just curiosity. We called it “Schloss hunting,” wandering back roads in search of castles, letting the landscape guide us.
During one of those quiet detours, I took a small 4×4 photograph with my Brownie camera. I simply titled it “Off the Beaten Path.”
When I showed that photograph to my father, he studied it for a moment and said,
“Let me paint this for you.”
My dad was an artist—but interestingly, he never taught me how to paint. There were no lessons, no instruction, no push in that direction. In fact, this was more than 20 years before I ever considered becoming an artist myself.
He recreated the scene in gouache, and that painting has lived with me since 1969. After he passed, it became more than just a landscape—it became a connection across time.
A Three-Generation Story in Images
The original photograph
The original 4×4 photograph taken in 1967 during a journey through Liechtenstein.
A vintage 1967 photograph capturing a quiet winter landscape in Liechtenstein, featuring a snow-covered valley, trees, and distant mountains. This image became the starting point for everything that followed.
My father’s painting.
From that photograph, my father created a gouache painting—soft, grounded, and timeless. It hung in my home for decades, quietly shaping something in me long before I ever thought about becoming an artist.
My father’s interpretation of the original photograph—painted in gouache and lived with me for decades.
“Three moments. One story. Spanning generations.”
And now—my interpretation.
Beyond the Beaten Path carries all three—memory, legacy, and a return to something that never left.
A Luminous Winter Landscape Beyond the Familiar
This isn’t your typical Sedona landscape painting.
There are no red rocks here—only snow, distance, and stillness. And yet, the spirit of Sedona remains in the way light moves, in the emotional pull, and in the sense of quiet discovery.
Much like Mesmerized, this piece explores snow, reflection, and atmosphere—but in a more grounded, memory-driven way. Where Mesmerized leans into music and night energy, Beyond the Beaten Path leans into history, lineage, and place.
Using fluorescent acrylics, I brought a subtle glow into the sky and landscape, creating a true Day-to-Night transformation.
By day, it feels calm and contemplative.
By night, under black light, hidden passages of color begin to glow—softly at first, then with quiet presence.
This evolving experience has become a signature across my Sedona landscape paintings and prints—artwork that doesn’t just sit on the wall, but changes with the room and the time of day.
Fluorescent Acrylics and Day-to-Night Presence
My fluorescent acrylic paintings are built in layers—carefully developed to respond to both natural light and black light.
Each layer adds depth, movement, and a subtle energy that reveals itself over time.
This creates a living surface—one that shifts, breathes, and invites you back again.
It’s not about overwhelming the viewer.
It’s about discovery.
Castle, Memory, and the Spirit of Exploration
The original journey that inspired this painting was rooted in “castle hunting”—searching for hidden structures across the European landscape.
That idea still lives inside this piece.
Even though there’s no visible castle here, the presence is implied—held in the distance, in the structure of the mountains, and in the quiet sense that something meaningful lies just beyond view.
It’s a feeling I’ve explored throughout my work, including my Sedona interpretation of Castle Rock in Enchanted Castle, where landscape and imagination meet.
Beyond the Beaten Path carries that same spirit—an invitation to look deeper, to sense what isn’t immediately seen.
Journey, Legacy, and the Unmarked Path
This painting reflects something deeper than location.
It’s about time.
It’s about connection.
And it’s about the unexpected path.
I didn’t become an artist because I was taught.
I became one because something stayed with me.
For decades, my father’s painting hung quietly in my life.
And years later, without planning it, I found myself returning to that same moment—this time with my own voice, my own tools, and my own way of seeing.
That’s what this painting represents.
Not just where you go—but what stays with you.
The Heart of It All
Art lights up the same part of your brain as
falling in love—it’s an unforgettable feeling.
Collector’s Note
Beyond the Beaten Path is part of my broader collection of luminous artwork, including my Sedona landscape paintings and prints, but it stands apart as one of the most personal pieces I’ve created.
It bridges past and present, father and son, memory and interpretation.
My work is also featured at the Village Gallery in Sedona—a Sedona art gallery known for representing only hand-made artwork by local artists, widely regarded as the true heart of Sedona’s art community.
