New Mexico Paintings Inspired by the Land and Culture
New Mexico has a character all its own. From the adobe architecture of Santa Fe and Taos to historic pueblos, missions, mountains, and brilliant Southwestern skies, the landscape gave me an entirely different collection of subjects to explore.
My New Mexico paintings reflect the color, architecture, history, and quiet beauty I discovered throughout the state. Many of these works were created in watercolor during an earlier chapter of my artistic journey, when I was developing the approach to color and Southwest landscapes that continues to influence my work today.
From Santa Fe to Taos
Santa Fe and Taos offered an extraordinary combination of natural beauty and distinctive architecture. Adobe walls, weathered vigas, old missions, pueblos, and the changing New Mexico light gave me subjects that seemed made for watercolor.
Paintings such as Taos Pueblo,Santa Clara Pueblo, San Miguel Mission, and Monday’s, based on a scene along Canyon Road in Santa Fe, each capture a different part of my experience with New Mexico. Together, they became part of my continuing exploration of the Southwest—not simply as places to reproduce, but as places to interpret through color.
An Earlier Chapter of My Artistic Journey

Long before fluorescent acrylics, patterned skies, and paintings that glow under black light became part of my style, watercolor taught me to think about transparency, light, contrast, and especially color.
Looking back at these paintings today, I can see the beginnings of ideas that eventually found their way into the vivid Southwest landscapes I create now.
The Land of Enchantment
There is a reason New Mexico is called the Land of Enchantment. Its combination of landscape, culture, history, architecture, and extraordinary light has inspired generations of artists.
For me, these paintings preserve my own encounters with that remarkable place and another chapter in the journey that eventually brought me to Sedona.
