The Spirit of the Southwest—Where Art Meets Legend
If you’ve ever dreamed of the American Southwest, chances are Monument Valley comes to mind. Its towering sandstone buttes, crimson mesas, and vast desert horizons have long defined the visual essence of the region. I felt deeply drawn to capture its cinematic aura—especially John Ford Point, the most iconic overlook in the valley and one that forever changed how the world sees the West.
Harry Goulding and the Hollywood Connection
Back in the 1930s, trader Harry Goulding and his wife Leone (“Mike”) lived in a humble outpost in Monument Valley. Hard times called for creativity, and Harry’s bold idea changed history. He carried photos of the valley straight to director John Ford, convincing him to film there. From that moment, Monument Valley became the legendary backdrop of Stagecoach and countless Western classics—its sculpted buttes forever immortalized on the silver screen. This piece honors that legacy. My panoramic composition captures the sweeping valley floor illuminated beneath a glowing sky, an echo of the timeless landscapes that first enchanted Hollywood.
My Artistic Vision
At ten feet wide, Monument Valley, John Ford Point is one of my largest original oil/acrylic paintings—an expansive scale that allows the landscape to breathe fully. The warm ochres, glowing violets, and radiant yellows are layered with care to capture the Southwest’s natural rhythm and light. The size alone commands attention, crafted for grand spaces—such as corporate lobbies, hotel galleries, or the homes of collectors who seek a statement piece that embodies both strength and serenity.

While I often paint Sedona’s red rock landscapes, this piece broadens the story—linking Sedona’s spiritual magnetism with Monument Valley’s vast silence. Both areas pulse with a mystical energy that inspires my Vivid Mystical Landscapes style, as seen in works like Rugged Serenity, Coyote’s Lunar Serenade, and Tequila Sunrise. Each artwork captures a different heartbeat of the desert.
The Texture — Earth, Light, and Motion
As seen in the texture images below, the surface of Monument Valley, John Ford Point reveals the physical rhythm of the land—thick knife-work, dimensional ridges, and layered glazes that echo the rugged geology of the valley itself. The sandstone buttes rise from textured, sculpted foundations, while the desert floor flows in luminous bands of ochre, violet, and burnt red.
