The Story Behind “Coyote’s Lunar Serenade"

Coyote’s Lunar Serenade holds a very personal history for me—one that dates back to 1993, long before I gained recognition for Sedona's luminous landscapes, fluorescent acrylics, or high-chroma desert scenes. At that time, I only painted in watercolor, and drawing was a real challenge. Because of that, I often used creative workarounds: I would incorporate elements from greeting cards, Sunday comic strips, and anything else that sparked my imagination. That early watercolor version, originally titled Coyote Moon, became one of those pieces.

A watercolor painting depicting a vivid desert night with a coyote howling under a full moon.

“Coyote Moon” – A glimpse into the Southwest, created in '93.

Years later, after moving from New Jersey to Sedona—and discovering my vivid, glowing style of Southwest wall art—I kept thinking about that old watercolor. I wondered what it might look like if I rebuilt it using the fluorescent techniques I’ve developed over the years. As an emerging artist, this idea of revisiting old work is meaningful to me. It shows how far I’ve come and how much my voice has grown. Re-imagining it became a bridge between who I was and who I am today.

Reimagining a Desert Classic in Fluorescent Color

Transforming Coyote Moon

Coyote’s Lunar Serenade meant letting go of the watercolor softness and embracing everything I love about Sedona’s luminous landscapes—bold edges, glow-in-the-dark wall art energy, and Day-to-Night transitions that feel alive. The phosphorescent acrylics work beautifully against the deep blues, fiery yellows, and glowing lunar textures. Under black-light, the entire scene shifts into another dimension, becoming part of my Southwest fluorescent art prints collection.

This is where Sedona truly changed the course of my life. Surrounded by red rocks and desert skies, my work shifted from cautious watercolor scenes to mystical artwork full of confidence, color, and voice. “Coyote’s Lunar Serenade” captures that journey.

Hidden Stories in the Rocks and Sky

This painting rewards anyone who takes the time to look closely. The coyote in the foreground howls into a glowing moon, but that’s just the beginning. A second hidden coyote is subtly woven into the rock formations—a nod to the playful spirit of the desert.

Near the base, a roadrunner races across the desert, painted by my friend and fellow artist Robert Shields. His addition connects this piece to Morgan, my “Sedona’s Red Rock Roadrunner,” creating a shared universe of characters and motion.

And like many of my luminous artworks, I tucked hidden hearts throughout the rocks and trees—small reminders of love and wonder that viewers discover over time.
