THE STORY BEHIND DESERT SENTINEL
Where the Desert Teaches Patience
Some paintings don’t start with an empty surface—they stem from something already familiar, something with a history. When I moved into my new art studio, I found an old wooden plank stored away, its presence suggesting it was meant for more. Instead of discarding it, I painted over it with titanium white and let a new story unfold—one that reflects both the desert’s resilience and my journey as an emerging Sedona artist.
That choice set the tone for Desert Sentinel—a panoramic desert landscape painting that captures the agave century plant in its rare, glorious bloom. Agaves wait a decade or more before sending up their towering stalk, transforming from quiet observers into dramatic monuments of Southwest artwork. Once they bloom, their life cycle completes, and there’s no stopping it. So, like the desert itself, I learned to appreciate the moment while it lasts.
The panoramic format became essential. Desert sentinels are not small experiences; they command space. This composition invites viewers to follow the stalk skyward, through Sedona’s luminous landscapes filled with the mystical energy that defines my Sedona wall art and Arizona Art Prints. The agave becomes both subject and symbol—rooted in place, yet reaching for something beyond itself. In that, I saw my own evolution: not rushing, simply rising in my own time.
A Personal Connection
Desert Sentinel is a vertical panoramic painting, created in a tall format to match the natural height and posture of the agave century plant. Its size and composition weren’t design choices—they were dictated by the subject itself. The plant doesn’t grow wide; it grows upward, and the artwork had to follow that truth.
My interest in agaves extends beyond just painting them. Two of mine bloomed and died here at my home in Sedona. Instead of discarding them, I repurposed one as a Christmas tree, as seen here. Its branches held ornaments naturally, and the structure remained intact. The other one stands on my deck with lights but no decorations. These aren’t props—they’re part of my everyday environment and the reason this subject became personal enough to paint.

A real agave century plant from my home, transformed into a Christmas tree after its final bloom.
Knowing that this plant only blooms once after decades of patience gave meaning to the tall, narrow shape of Desert Sentinel. It wasn’t just a composition choice—it was an honest reflection of the way this desert sentinel lives its life.
Limited Edition Hand-Embellished Giclée
Several collectors have asked if Desert Sentinel would ever be available in a more personal format than a print. In response, I created a Limited Edition Hand-Embellished Giclée, offered only in the original panoramic size and limited to 25 pieces.
Each piece is hand-embellished in my Sedona art studio, adding unique brushwork and texture so that every edition develops its own character. Once all 25 editions are finished, no additional sizes or versions will be made.
This option allows collectors to own a version that captures more of the original’s presence without the expense of a full painting.
A Collection with Meaning
Owning Desert Sentinel—whether as an original or one of the 25 Limited Edition Hand-Embellished Giclées—connects the collector with this phase of my artistic journey and the evolving vision behind Sedona Art Studios. Desert Sentinel, along with works like Iconic Saguaro, can also be experienced in person at the Village Gallery in Sedona, a place that has played an important role in helping me share these Southwest subjects with collectors who want to see Sedona artwork up close.
