The Story Behind Tequila Sunrise
When I first arrived in Sedona in 2003, my wife and I explored Arizona with a sense of discovery. One unforgettable morning near Tucson, I stood among towering saguaros and felt something shift. These weren’t just plants. They were living monuments—silent, resilient, legendary.
That word stayed with me.
Years later, it would become the title of another painting, Legend. But Tequila Sunrise is where that feeling truly began.
I carried my 35mm SLR and photographed relentlessly, chasing the way first light wrapped around each cactus rib. Those reference images later informed several works, including Mystical Desert Journey, which grew from that same period of discovery and experimentation.
Tequila Sunrise was one of the very first desert landscape paintings to emerge from that archive. It carries the spark of a younger artist finding his voice—before the full refinement of Iconic Saguaro, yet already leaning toward the luminous Sedona style that would define my emerging body of work.
A Southwest Morning Reimagined
Saguaros stand like cathedral columns across violet terrain. Long shadows stretch forward as the horizon ignites in layered warmth. The sky hums with movement—echoing the rhythm I would later explore in Coyote’s Lunar Serenade, where desert light and spirit intertwine.
Painted in high-chroma fluorescent acrylics, Tequila Sunrise subtly shifts from day to night. Under black light, hidden hearts and phosphorescent accents emerge—revealing the Day-to-Night quality that has become a hallmark of my luminous Southwest artwork.
The Panoramic Presence
For collectors seeking greater scale, Tequila Sunrise is also offered as a dedicated panoramic edition, expanding the desert horizon and amplifying the sense of openness. The wider format enhances spatial flow—ideal for above sofas, beds, or expansive walls where the desert can truly breathe.
The panoramic composition connects beautifully with Legend, which also explores breadth and atmospheric depth within the Southwest landscape.
A Quiet Symbolism
Hidden hearts rest within the desert terrain—symbols of gratitude and connection woven throughout my work. Sedona’s Red Rock Roadrunner (Morgan,) another piece within my Top Nine collection, carries that same spirit of layered meaning and emotional storytelling.
Collectors often choose Tequila Sunrise for bedrooms, meditation spaces, or studies—places where warmth, grounding energy, and gentle inspiration matter most.
The Heart of It All
Art lights up the same part of your brain as
falling in love—it’s an unforgettable feeling.
Collector’s Note
The original Tequila Sunrise now lives in a private Chicago collection. Knowing where an original resides—and the connection it holds for its collector—is always meaningful to me.
As part of my Top Nine collection, Tequila Sunrise represents renewal and beginnings. It reflects a pivotal moment in my evolution—from early exploration toward the confident, high-chroma fluorescent acrylic style that now defines my Sedona luminous landscapes.
My work is also featured at the Village Gallery in Sedona—a Sedona art gallery known for representing only hand-made artwork by local artists, widely regarded as the true heart of Sedona’s art community.
