The Story Behind “Fire in the Sky”

I painted ‘Fire in the Sky’ while living in the Village of Oak Creek, inspired by my favorite hiking trail—the Baldwin Trail near Cathedral Rock. That overlook provided an expansive sense of place—kind of a wide, cinematic view that collectors love for panoramic landscape art and large-scale walls.

Fire in the Sky marked a turning point. I moved beyond my earlier approach and took a bolder step. In my Sedona studio, I used a sea sponge to create the trees and soft reflections. When the sky came into focus—ribbons of crimson streaming into ultramarine—a friend laughed, “It looks like the skies on fire.” The name stuck, and so did the feeling that I’d finally found my voice as an emerging artist.

Transition to Luminous Expression (and Scale)

Fire in the Sky became the bridge to my Sedona luminous landscapes. Although non-fluorescent, the color fields glow from within. The composition carries an expansive, horizon-to-horizon energy that translates beautifully into Panoramic Landscape Paintings and Panoramic Wall Art installations. Collectors often choose Panoramic Landscape Prints of this work for great rooms, entry walls, and long corridors where the sky’s movement can breathe. What mattered most was trusting the feeling rather than copying the scene—creating luminous artwork that reads as both Southwest wall art and a memory of light.

From Sedona to Guangzhou

In 2019, Fire in the Sky traveled across the ocean to the American Contemporary Art Show in Guangzhou, China—a sold-out exhibition for private collectors—featured alongside Sweet Dreams, Sky of Grace, and Enchanted Castle. For an artist still emerging, seeing my Sedona paintings resonate internationally proved that color and rhythm transcend borders.

Artistic Reflections

Each brushstroke reminds me of what it means to be in motion as an artist. The strong contrasts and reflective water set the stage for later pieces in my Southwest artwork — including wide compositions made specifically for Panoramic Paintings and Panoramic Landscape Art presentations. While Fire in the Sky isn’t part of my Top Nine, it remains a pivotal chapter in my Cathedral Rock Series .
