The Story Behind Coyotes Lunar Serenade
Coyotes Lunar Serenade began long before I became known for Sedonas glowing landscapes or fluorescent acrylic techniques. In 1993, when I lived in New Jersey, I was painting only in watercolor. Drawing did not come easily to me then, so I often relied on creative solutions to express ideas I did not yet have the confidence to draw freehand. I looked for inspiration anywhere I could find it, from greeting cards to comic strips, until a watercolor painting titled Coyote Moon finally emerged. That early work planted the seed for what would one day become Coyotes Lunar Serenade.
Years later, everything changed when I moved to Sedona. The red rocks, desert night skies, and mystical energy of this landscape transformed not only my artwork but also my sense of artistic identity. Sedona showed me that art could glow, radiate emotion, and feel alive. As I discovered fluorescent acrylics, I realized that the humble watercolor I created decades earlier deserved a second life. Coyotes Lunar Serenade became that rebirth.
Reimagining Coyote Moon in Fluorescent Color
Transforming Coyote Moon into Coyotes Lunar Serenade required more than revisiting an old idea. It meant stepping fully into the bold, glowing Day to Night art style that defines my work today. Fluorescent acrylics allowed me to layer energy into every shape and color, turning the desert nightscape into a fully immersive experience. Under regular light, the moonlit coyote stands proudly against a star filled desert scene. Under black light, Coyotes Lunar Serenade shifts into another dimension, revealing intense color shifts, hidden energy, and visual depth that feels sculptural and alive.

“Coyote Moon” – A glimpse into the Southwest, created in ’93.
This transformation reflects my journey as an emerging artist. Coyotes Lunar Serenade is not simply a painting. It is evidence of growth, persistence, and the discovery of a voice that feels purely mine. Each layer of paint represents a step on the path from hesitant watercolor scenes to confident, luminous compositions that invite viewers to feel something rather than simply observe.
Hidden Stories in the Rocks and Sky
Coyotes Lunar Serenade offers more than a howling coyote beneath a glowing moon. A second coyote shape is hidden among the rock formations, waiting for discovery. Near the foreground, a roadrunner races across the desert, contributed by my friend and fellow artist Robert Shields, creating a playful link to my Sedona piece Sedonas Red Rock Roadrunner. Hidden hearts are tucked throughout the rocks and sky, symbolizing the love we carry for the land and the love the land gives in return.
From Early Watercolors to High-Chroma Acrylic Works
As an artist, this piece marks an important transition. It symbolizes the bridge from my early watercolor years, when I relied on borrowed imagery just to keep painting, to the high chroma acrylic works that define my style today. Coyotes Lunar Serenade captures everything I love about Southwest artwork, Sedona wall art, Arizona art prints, and mystical paintings that glow with personality.
