The Story Behind “Buddha’s Kaleidoscope”
“Buddha’s Kaleidoscope” started long before the brush ever touched the canvas. Years ago, I spent two unforgettable weeks on a 75-foot houseboat on Lake Powell — a trip that changed how I experienced color, silence, and the vastness of the Southwest. The desert cliffs seemed to breathe, and the sky moved like a living tapestry. That time stayed with me, quietly shaping the artist I was becoming.
When I returned home to Sedona, I showed an early version of this piece to friends at a Christmas party. Someone pointed to the sky and said, “It looks like Buddha lying on his side.” That moment gave the painting its name — Buddha’s Kaleidoscope — capturing both the peaceful stillness and the swirling motion of the sky.
“Buddha’s Kaleidoscope” was created before I ever painted hidden hearts into my artwork. Instead, I filled the early landscapes with animals woven into the shapes of rock and sky. The sky itself reminded me of a kaleidoscope — full of shifting patterns, mystery, and color. Anchoring the scene is Sleeping Indian, one of the most recognizable rock formations in the region, grounding this mystical palette in familiar Southwest terrain.
A Turning Point in My Artistic Evolution
As an emerging artist, I reflect on this painting as one of the first times I started trusting my own creative instincts. “Buddha’s Kaleidoscope” was painted with non-fluorescent acrylics, but even then, I was already leaning toward the luminous quality that now defines my Sedona luminous landscapes.
I didn’t know it at the time, but this piece became the foundation for “Powell’s Celestial Dreamscape.” That later work rises from the mountains upward — a celestial transformation of the grounded landscape seen in “Buddha’s Kaleidoscope.” Together, the two pieces form a before-and-after dialogue about imagination, growth, and learning to see the world in a new way.
Collectors familiar with my Top Nine will recognize the roots of that series here — the early use of color, the spiritual themes, the storytelling, and the Southwest wall art that has now become central to my style.
Where Inspiration Meets Place
Lake Powell’s Spirit in Paint
Lake Powell is a place of contrasts — vast open spaces and cozy coves, reflective waters and towering sandstone cliffs, silence interrupted only by the echoes of distant canyon walls. Those two weeks taught me how stillness can feel vivid. “Buddha’s Kaleidoscope” carries that feeling forward.
Sleeping Indian and the Kaleidoscope Sky
The recognizable outline of Sleeping Indian provides stability to the otherwise shifting sky. Its silhouette helped me transform the sky into something more mystical—a blend of nature and imagination that influenced many of my later panoramic landscape paintings.
A Panoramic Window into the Southwest
Panoramic Scale
Created as a wide, immersive panorama, “Buddha’s Kaleidoscope” invites viewers to feel as though they’re standing beside the shoreline at sunset. Its elongated format is perfect for collectors looking for Panoramic Landscape Paintings, Panoramic Wall Art, and Southwestern artwork that spans long walls with color and meaning.
The Heart of It All
“Art lights up the same part of your brain as
falling in love—it’s an unforgettable feeling.”
