The Story Behind “Patriotic Longhorns”
My panoramic watercolor Patriotic Longhorns started with one of the most emotional moments of my life. One week after 9/11, while I was living in New Jersey, I went into New York City. The city felt different—quiet, heavy, and changed. I walked through Union Square, where hundreds of people stood together in near silence. Every wall, pole, and open surface was covered with photos of missing loved ones, handwritten notes, prayers, and desperate messages.
During that time, I connected with a firefighter who had spent days working through the wreckage at Ground Zero. When I visited his home, he handed me a small piece of a steel girder he had cut from the debris. I still have it. Even now, when I hold it in my hand, I feel its weight—part sorrow, part history, part strength.
The experience stayed with me for years, but I painted Patriotic Longhorns almost right away, driven by the emotion of the moment and the need to create something that honored the survivors, the families, and the enduring American spirit I witnessed firsthand.
A Panoramic Vision of Strength
Although symbolic, I designed Patriotic Longhorns inspired by Panorama and Panoramic Landscape Art, giving the longhorn skull the presence and impact of a sweeping Western horizon. Against a vibrant, textured red backdrop, the skull becomes a focal point of resilience.
The flag’s blue crown with white stars stretches across the forehead, while the red and white stripes flow naturally down the skull and extend across the long, sweeping horns. These elements aren’t draped—they’re painted directly onto the skull, symbolizing unity and strength.
Watercolor enabled me to achieve luminous saturation and atmospheric movement in the background. The gradients, soft edges, and diagonal strokes evoke a sense of motion—mirroring the emotional momentum that inspired it.
This piece later found its way into the private art collection of President George W. Bush.
From Loss to Artistry — My Journey Back
Watercolor was my first medium—long before my Sedona luminous landscapes, Southwest wall art, and Vivid Mystical Acrylics. Patriotic Longhorns and Ferdinand’s Flowers embody the emotional DNA of those early years. These beginnings helped shape the Sedona Artwork, Sedona Paintings, Mystical Paintings, and Sedona luminous landscapes I create today at Sedona Art Studios.
Patriotic Longhorns helped pave the way for the panoramic wall art and luminous artwork that make up my Top Nine Collection.
Where You Can See My Artwork
Patriotic Longhorns is showcased at The Village Gallery in Sedona, one of the top spaces for Southwest artwork, Sedona luminous landscapes, and Panoramic Paintings.
The Heart of It All
“Art lights up the same part of your brain as
falling in love—it’s an unforgettable feeling.”
Collector’s Note
Patriotic Longhorns remains one of my most meaningful panoramic watercolor paintings. Whether displayed as a giclée art print or a panoramic canvas gallery wrap, it conveys symbolism, emotion, and a vibrant tribute to American resilience in your home.
