The Story Behind Whimsical Daydream
A Cathedral Rock Awakening
Whimsical Daydream was painted in 2018 and marks an important chapter in my artistic journey. This piece represents the moment when Cathedral Rock truly became a personal muse—less as a landmark and more as a feeling. Known as the most photographed red rock formation in all of Arizona, Cathedral Rock carries a presence that feels both grounding and expansive.
“Whimsical Daydream is part of my Cathedral Rock series, a body of work that began in 2018 and marked the start of my long-term relationship with this iconic Sedona formation. Cathedral Rock would go on to shape many of my most collected pieces, including Pure Joy and Lover’s View, both inspired by the saddle and its unique sense of energy.”
This painting reflects my early approach to Sedona luminous landscapes, blending imagination with place in a Southwest wall art style rooted in emotional storytelling.
Rather than chasing a literal rendering, I allowed imagination to take the lead in Whimsical Daydream. The patterned sky, layered color, and softened forms were intentional choices, meant to carry emotion rather than weather. I wanted the scene to feel alive—moving, breathing, and slightly dreamlike—just as Cathedral Rock feels when you experience it in person.
From Saddle to Canvas
A Place That Keeps Calling
The saddle at Cathedral Rock has long held a quiet pull for me. It is a place where light, land, and stillness converge, and it has inspired several of my works. Two of my other paintings, Pure Joy and Lover’s View, are also painted representations of this same area.
In Whimsical Daydream, that influence appears more poetically. The vertical reflection and centered light path create a sense of calm and balance, subtly echoing the vortex energy so many people feel there. This painting is not about documenting a location—it is about translating what it feels like to stand there and let your thoughts drift.
A Return to Painting
The Spark That Reignited Everything
Not long before creating this piece, I had stepped away from painting for nearly six years. It was my oil painting Creekside Cathedral that brought me back. That work reignited my creative drive and reminded me why I paint—to explore emotion, light, and place in a way that feels honest.
Whimsical Daydream followed soon after, carrying forward that renewed sense of freedom. This period became the foundation for my evolving style and the body of work that would later gain wider recognition.
From Sedona to the World
The China Show Connection
Several years later, my artwork would travel internationally when it was featured and collected during the American Contemporary Art Show in Guangzhou, China. That experience affirmed something I had quietly believed—that the spirit of Sedona, and Cathedral Rock in particular, resonates far beyond its physical location.
Whimsical Daydream belongs to the lineage of paintings that made that moment possible. Rooted in imagination, emotion, and place, it reflects the early voice that eventually carried my work from Sedona to a global audience.
