Vortex Lovers was inspired by time spent hiking, photographing, and quietly standing at one of Sedona’s most powerful vortex sites—Cathedral Rock. This place has always felt alive to me, not just visually breathtaking but energetically charged, as if the land itself is breathing. Over time, I kept returning to the formation locals call “The Lovers,” two towering red-rock spires believed to symbolize ancient spirits locked in an eternal embrace.
Where Sedona’s Vortex Energy Lives
Sedona is famous worldwide for its vortexes—places where energy is believed to spiral upward, enhancing awareness, emotions, and creativity. Cathedral Rock is regarded as one of the most powerful. Standing there, you experience a quiet intensity, a sense of connection that’s difficult to explain but impossible to ignore.
This painting reflects my response to that feeling.
I didn’t want to just record what the eye sees. I wanted to express what the body feels when you’re there—grounded by the red rock, lifted by the sky, and caught somewhere between earth and spirit.
Painting Love, Energy, and Motion
In Vortex Lovers, the red formations glow with high-chroma acrylics, pushed beyond realism into something more emotional and symbolic. The sky moves with patterned currents and floating forms, echoing the invisible energy lines said to pass through this sacred space.
Fluorescent acrylics play a key role here. During the day, the colors are bold and luminous. After dark, under black light, the painting reveals a second personality—soft glows, hidden movement, and a quiet radiance that mirrors Sedona’s Day-to-Night transformation.
This duality is at the heart of my work. I call these pieces Day-to-Night art because they keep living even after the lights go out.
A Sister Painting, A Different Perspective
Vortex Lovers is the sister painting to Lover’s View, created from the same legendary location but with a more expansive, mystical perspective. While Lover’s View invites you into the landscape, Vortex Lovers fully embraces Sedona’s mythology—love, union, and the unseen forces that attract people here from around the world.
Together, the two paintings reveal a deeper story about Sedona’s allure: why visitors feel transformed after a trip, and why certain places stay with us long after we’ve gone.
Cathedral Rock Series: A Living Tribute
Vortex Lovers is part of my ongoing Cathedral Rock Series, a heartfelt tribute to Sedona’s most iconic and spiritually charged landmark. This collection features fourteen luminous acrylic paintings, each capturing Cathedral Rock at a different time—sunrise, high noon, sunset, moonrise, and the quiet hours in between.
Instead of repeating the same perspective, I see Cathedral Rock as a living presence. Its light shifts, its energy varies, and each visit uncovers something new. Some paintings emphasize bold daylight colors, while others capture the calm of twilight or the mystery of night. Collectively, the series illustrates Sedona’s sacred beauty as something constantly changing yet timeless.
Vortex Lovers embodies the emotional and spiritual core of the series—where legend, love, and vortex energy come together. The twin spires known as “The Lovers” are more than just rock formations; they symbolize connection, balance, and lasting presence within Sedona’s vibrant landscape.
From Trail to Canvas
I photographed Cathedral Rock while hiking one of Sedona’s iconic trails, observing how light moves across the stone and how the sky opens above the spires. Back in my studio, those impressions influenced the composition—not as a strict guide, but as a memory of being there.
As an emerging artist, I’m inspired by moments of discovery—how landscape, emotion, and energy can coexist in a single piece.
